 SEEQUENCE

// GENERATIVE INSTALLATION - 2024

Inspired by the cyclical nature of astronomical events, this piece explores generative randomness through vague symbolism, contrasting cycles, and the interpretive dialogues formed in between. It creates a shifting narrative of foreign imagery, some more recognizable than others, to allow for viewers to find their own meanings. Through staggering repetition, the two screens make it known there is connection, contrast, and conversation. Similar to the Rorschach inkblot tests, the meanings pulled from this piece speak to our own individual perspectives and interpretations.

The piece is built upon a simple set of rules. The right screen is based on emotion, while the left based on logic. The imagery plays on our basic, and often subconscious understandings of duality. Round vs sharp, warm vs cold, left-brain vs right brain, day vs night, with only one single image shared between the 2 screens, a solar eclipse. It is meant to entice viewers to draw connections between chance events, as they flip back and forth in complete randomness.

SEEQUENCE was coded in MAX MSp.The screens flip back and forth in 1 second intervals, along with a 24 second fade cycle, representative of hours in a day. The images were created in a few different ways. Some are objects I photographed and manipulated, some are collages made from vintage scans, others are very old pieces of footage from past projects, and a few video clips pulled from online. Two separate audios were made to match the themes of the screens, and pan in and out between left and right speaker, controlled by the 24 second fade cycle. Audio was created through a collection of old iphone recordings, some repurposed from past projects, and keyboard synth.
