SUBJECT TO CHANGE

 SUBJECT TO CHANGE

// INTERACTIVE VIDEO INSTALLATION - 2024

SUBJECT TO CHANGE is an exploration of memory and the ways in which degradation, alternative perspectives and the passage of time can contribute to variations when recalling a single event. It considers the distortions of false memories, misunderstandings, and the unique details that stay with us through life. Inspired by a conversation with my sister where we compared details of our childhood memories, the piece is ultimately about how past experiences shape our future perceptions.

To create this piece, I coded a system of audio reactive variations in MAX, that mix and overlap in relation to adjustments in the volume. The video displays 3 variations of the same clip, hidden under its original solid black layer. Each variation has a designated audio attached to it, depicting a sense of positivity, negativity, or anxious uncertainty. As the volumes for each audio increase, the videos attached to them mix and blend in increasingly erratic ways,symbolizing the messiness of memory.

The audio is a compilation of recordings from distinct moments and conversations, mixed with synth. The video used was recorded on a digital camera, and ran through a VHS to achieve analogue distortion. Interactivity was done through an attached midi board with knobs,and hooked up to a CRT TV. This piece is part of an ongoing exploration with merging digital and analogue materials.

An alternate version of this video footage was also used in a project titled 123. The black and white backgrounds are architectural photos taken on 35mm film, and altered through darkroom manipulation. The intention of this work was to experiment with ways that digital beings can explore analogue spaces.
